The Cloverfield Paradox
The body suits in this film were designed to convey mechanical counter pressure (MCP) suits inspired by the work of Dava Newman and the MIT Bio-Suit, which itself builds on prior SAS research by NASA and the Air Force. Hard elements were added such as knee and elbow pads, and life support body armor. Stacia Lang and illustrator Felipe Sanchez worked together to map out the intricate circuits of printed lines and pressure elastic on bodysuits fitted to the actors, in accordance with the costume designer’s notes. A painstaking and precise process, the paper patterns with the lines for each actor’s suit were then digitized by a digital pattern technician and the files and fabrics sent to the printing house. Upon delivery back to the shop, the printed fabric pieces were cut out, the elastic cord applied, and the suits assembled. The fit was then fine-tuned on the principal and stunt actors, along with hard armor elements.
